Nokia 6.2 review

The Nokia 6.2 is a cheaper alternative to the Nokia 7.2. It has the same large screen with HDR10 support and the triple-camera setup, but its more affordable owing to downgrades of the chipset and the selfie camera.

The Nokia 6.2 is a nice looking glass phone with a 6.3" PureDisplay - meaning an IPS LCD screen of 1080p+ resolution with HDR10 support. It has an 8MP selfie shooter within its droplet-shaped notch, while the triple camera on the back is similar to the Nokia 7.'s regular/ultrawide/depth combo, though the primary sensor has changed. The battery stays the same at 3,500 mAh capacity, and so is the operating system. It's Android 9 Pie and the phone is part of the Android One program which means stock looking UI and a relatively fast track for updates.

The Nokia 6.2 is looking really good in spite of the Snapdragon 636 concerns and we are more than happy to give it a fair fighting chance.

Unboxing the Nokia 6.2

The Nokia 6.2 comes in a rather large paper box and its bundle contains a 10W charger, a USB-C cable, and a cheap-looking plastic headset with a mic.

There is no silicone case inside the box, and you don't get a pre-applied screen protector either.

Nokia 7.2 review

Nokia 7.2 review: The mixed bag mid-ranger | Android Central

The Nokia 7 was a China-exclusive from two years ago, while the 7 plus went global and was a bit of an unsung hero back in early 2018, offering a lot of phone at a very reasonable price. The 7.1 wasn't quite its spiritual successor, slipping instead into a slightly lower tier in the midrange. We now have the Nokia 7.2 with us and we'll attempt to answer the question whether the 7-series is happy where the 7.1 took it, or it wants back to the plus' level.

One thing straight off the 7 plus is the chipset and we're not entirely certain that's a good thing. The Snapdragon 660 is plenty powerful, sure, but is now more than two years old and more efficient options are available. At least you can spec the 7.2 with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with the base model not coming with the .1's measly 3/32GB but the plus' 4/64GB.

Shared with that model are the overall dimensions too - while the 7.1 was a smaller phone, the 7.2 is back to plus size. But the build quality differs and the new phone has a composite frame that may be as tough as and lighter than aluminum, but it's not strictly premium to the touch, which the 7 plus did manage.

Nokia 7.2 initial review: Putting Zeiss into the mid-range

Anyway, the Nokia 7.2 comes with a 6.3-inch IPS display bringing a significant increase in area over the 7.1. Helping with that is also the notch - Nokia's shifted some components around and now it it only holds the selfie camera, making for a smaller cutout.

What's not small is the camera bump on the back, but it's got a bunch of cameras to show for it - a 48MP Quad Bayer primary unit is joined by an ultra wide angle 8MP module and a 5MP depth sensor. So it does have one more meaningful camera than the 7.1, but still omits a telephoto, which the 7 plus did have.

Nokia 7.2 specs

  • Body: 159.9x75.1x8.3mm, 180g; Gorilla Glass 3 front and back; Cyan Green, Charcoal, Ice color schemes.
  • Screen: 6.3" FullHD+ LCD, PureDisplay, waterdrop notch, HDR10.
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 660 (14nm): Octa-core CPU (4x2.2GHz Kryo 260 & 4x1.8GHz Kryo 260); Adreno 512 GPU.
  • Memory: 4/6GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, microSD slot.
  • OS: Android 9.0 Pie; Android One.
  • Rear camera: Main: 48MP, 1/2.0" Quad Pixel sensor, f/1.79. Ultra-wide: 8MP, f/2.2, 118-degree FoV. Depth sensor: 5MP. Zeiss optics, LED flash.
  • Front camera: 20MP, Quad Pixel sensor, f/2.0.
  • Battery: 3,500mAh, 5V/2A charging.
  • Misc: USB-C, 3.5mm jack, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, 2 mics, FM radio, Google Assistant button, notification LED.

The specsheet is nothing out of the ordinary, but we do mention the notification LED as it's inside the power button, which we hadn't seen before. We hadn't seen a 10W charger in a while either, and that's less exciting. What else is in the package, you ask?

Nokia 7.2 unboxing

The Nokia 7.2 comes in a compact flat box with a photo of two people shaking hands and the outline of the phone printed on it. Get it? Nokia - connecting people. Inside it, the phone sits to the right, its plastic sleeve pointing at the Google Assistant dedicated button.

To the left of the phone is a box that holds the accessories. You get a basic 5V/2A adapter, a USB-A-to-C cable, and an inexpensive-looking set of earbuds. Essentially, you have the basics covered to get started, perhaps a freebie case was too much to ask for.

Nokia 9 review

The next ReView phone was in the rumors for years and yet it didn't come to pass. But it wasn't dead, it was lying dormant somewhere in Nokia, and later - HDM's labs all this time - and now it's available for purchase.

The Nokia 9 launched in the heat of the smartphone photography war and it seems already ahead of the competition - while others are adopting the triple-cam setup and Huawei pushing the quadruple, Nokia is already ahead of the game with the first hexa-camera on the back.

Don't get that excited just yet. Even though there are six snappers, not one of those is wide or telephoto. That's because the Nokia 9 PureView isn't targeting the casual user - but the photography enthusiasts who are already used to shooting RAW on their digital cameras and would welcome the same experience on a phone. But more about that new camera in a minute.

Nokia 9 PureView specs: Five cameras and Android One | Android Central

The rest of the Nokia 9 specs aren't as cutting-edge. The phone boasts a 5.99" OLED screen of QHD+ resolution, a last year's Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6GB of RAM, and a 3,320 mAh battery that won't last it a whole lot.

Other aspects of the phone are more up-to-date. It features an in-screen fingerprint scanner and a 20MP selfie snapper capable of pixel-binning for improved low-light performance. It also boots the latest version of Android One - Pie and it has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.

Nokia 9 ReView specs

  • Body: Gorilla Glass 5 back, 6000 Series aluminum frame, 8mm thickness
  • Screen: 5.99" p-OLED display QHD+ (2880 x 1440px), HDR10; Gorilla Glass 5
  • Chipset: Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845
  • Memory: 6GB RAM, 128GB built-in storage
  • OS: Android 9.0; Android One
  • Rear camera: 3x 12MP f/1.8 Monochrome + 2x 12MP f/1.8 RGB + 3D ToF camera; 4K@30fps and 4K HDR video recording
  • Front camera: 20MP F/1.8 with Tetracell pixel binning, which combines four pixels into one pixel in low light
  • Battery: 3,320 mAh; Quick Charge 3.0, Wireless charging (up to 10W)
  • Connectivity: Cat. 16 Gigabit LTE (1024/150 Mbps), Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC, USB-C port
  • Misc: IP67 rating, In-display fingerprint scanner + 2D face unlock

The Nokia 9's PureView camera has five 12MP modules with the same fixed focal length of 28mm along with a ToF camera. The output of all cameras is combined into one for a supposedly stunning image with unmatched dynamic range. Lossless zoom is on the table, too. This all sounds promising, but those looking for the versatility of the different focal ranges that other manufacturers are offering might be disappointed.

The last year's chipset is also a slight setback even though the Nokia 9 is much cheaper than any other newly released flagship. Okay, perhaps it's not as cheap as the Xiaomi Mi 9 but it's still competitively priced. Whether HMD didn't have the time to implement the camera complexity onto a new chip or it was something else - we won't know. But the Nokia 9 is pitched as a limited edition, which means the future of the PureView camera is hanging in the balance and the Nokia 9 will tip the scales one way or the other. Let's hope HMD's risks do pan out.

Unboxing the Nokia 9

The Nokia 9 retail bundle has all the essentials - an 18W charger, a USB-C cable, and a pair of in-ear headphones with the good ol' 3.5mm jack.

Since the Nokia 9 doesn't have an analog audio port, HMD is also proving a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter. We have to admit this is the first time a maker ships a smartphone, flagship at that, with a headset that will always require an adapter and we find this odd, if not lazy.
